Posted on Wed, 12 Aug 2015
Question: Hi. 57 year old male. I am constipated with slight nagging pain in left abdomen. Should I rely on OTC remedy? I'm guessing the pain is related (?). My last BM was Wednesday. I've had a couple of small ones that consisted of marble size bits and difficult to pass.

Brief Answer:
Considerations

Detailed Answer:
hello and thank you for sending the question.

A couple of considerations for you. We want to make sure that you're drinking enough fluids. Dehydration can exacerbate constipation. Also if there has been any change in your medications recently this could have an effect on your bowel movements.

initially, over-the-counter remedies should be adequate to try for another day or two but if your symptoms persist I would suggest that you talk to your primary care physician.your doctor might suggest some testing including blood test looking for electrolyte abnormalities or possibly an x-ray.

If your symptoms progress or you developed worsening of Domino pain, fever or chills and you should probably go to the local emergency room.

Sincerely,

Dr. Galamaga
