Posted on Tue, 10 Oct 2017
Question: I am having a sense of imbalance and slight dizziness when I shift glance or turn head quickly. I feel the need to walk with my legs farther apart than normal to feel secure. I have leg cramps and my left hand pulled into a semi fist involuntarily yesterday. I am 80 year old male and worked outside yesterday for three hours, and got dehydrated. I slept over 10 hours and feel better today but still the slight imbalance and slight sensation that my left leg wants to go into spasm.

Brief Answer:
Most probably it is benign positional vertigo.

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for posting your query.

I am Dr Sudhir Kumar, Neurologist, and I would try my best to help you.

I have noted your clinical details. Based on this, the most likely cause of your symptoms is benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). In this condition, there is a minor defect in the inner ear. It tends to get better on own and symptoms subside in 5-7 days. You can take betahistine tablets, to get relief from dizziness.

If symptoms persist, you may require a brain scan to exclude a minor brain stroke (due to reduced blood flow to a part of brain called cerebellum).

I hope my answer helps. Please get back if you have any follow up queries or if you require any additional information.

Wishing you good health,
