Question : I had a Mirena IUD inserted 8 days ago, at this point I was 5 days late for my period which is why I had it inserted, to regulate my periods. I had taken 2 pregnancy test both being negative. After it was inserted I had some cramping but no other symptoms and my period started the next day and ended Dec 7. The last two days I have some pretty bad cramps, almost reminding me somewhat of contractions. And now I am soaking through a pad every 3-4 hours, and I have had a couple of what I believe to be blood clots, however it is not easily broken apart. Not really sure if this is normal with a IUD
Thank you
                            Thank you
                                    Brief Answer:
Common side effects with an IUD
Detailed Answer:
Hi dear, I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.
Cramps in lower abdomen, spotting and bleeding for few weeks after the insertion of any IUD, and same are the side effects with Mirena IUD.
This is due to the reaction of the uterus to an external object inserted in its cavity.
The cramps and bleeding will subside in few days.
You should take tranexemic acid with mefenamic acid, which will relieve you from cramps as well as the bleeding.
Hope you found the answer helpful. Please do get back for further queries.

Are the blood clots normal? They are about the size of a nickel to quarter

                                    Brief Answer:
Its normal
Detailed Answer:
Hi dear, blood clots are normal in bleeding occurring just after IUD insertion. It occurs due to slight injury to the uterine endometrium by the IUD.
Please tranexemic acid with mefenamic acid, as it will help you decrease the blood flow also.
