What Causes Lower Abdominal Pain After A Total Hysterectomy?

default
Posted on Mon, 1 Dec 2014
Question: I had a total hysterectomy 2 weeks ago. Last night I woke with pain in my lower right quadrant. I have had this pain off and on all day. My symptoms besides the pain is a little chill and bloating. It's hard to get up off the couch when I want to go for a walk but once I straighten up I can move better. Is this a possible case of appendicitis or do I just have some major gas?

Brief Answer:
unlikely appendix, undertake ultrasound pelvis

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for contacting healthcaremagic.

This bloating sensation and pain off and on over the right iliac fossa is more likely to be spasmodic cramp rather than appendicitis. Also there is a possiblity of post op adhesions which can sometimes cause a loop of intestine to adhere with the anterior abdominal wall , and causing pain during the normal peristaltic wave.

But as it subsides on its own , its likely to be spasmodic. After 2 weeks post hysterectomy, some amount of pain over the wound is natural , but it should not cause it specific over rt. lower quadrant and wont be intermittent. Ambulation is the key to early recovery in cases of hysterectomy so its encouraged.

However to rule out any outher pathology , you may undertake a follow up ultrasound pelvis to rule out any organic cause.
