This part of the body has many lymph nodes associated with it. It is possible that you contracted some type of viral infection which caused your lymph nodes to swell.
This can contribute to significant pain which can radiate toward the back of the head.
usually this type of collection of symptoms will slowly resolve within 7 to 10 days.
If your symptoms do not get better or if they become worse then I recommend that you make an appointment to see your primary care doctor for evaluation.
