Question: I ate very different foods on Valentines Day, including high fiber whole wheat pancakes, it was quite thick & had blueberries in it.Then myhusband made blueberries, cherries, apples cooked 1 packet Splenda (I'm used to that). Later in the day I made Dr. Oeker Chocolate mousse made with Silk "non-dairy" m ilk.
When I had a colonoscopy last year it was good, just 2 small polyps & to return again in 5 years. Sun. night cramps; Mon. black BM, shiny, looked like plastic. Later Mon. BM was brown. Tues. today, BM was brown kind of diarrhea. Do I have to report to my dr. for internal medicine re black BM? What does the black BM mean - too much fiber? Thank you very much. XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Hello likely not to worry

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to HCM
Thank you for your query
I understand your concern
Possibly you have black stools due to diet contents
Junk foods, including candy, sugary drinks and fatty salty snacks, are a dietary factor related to dark bowel movements. The type of food plays a role: black licorice, dark chocolate cookies and colorful fruit punch can turn your stool dark green to black. So I think it's not to worry.
Worthwhile keep an eye on stool color.
If it is semisolid foul smelling and tarry black then it needs to be evaluated.
If you are still worried can get stool occult blood tests done on three different occasions to get rid of anxiety.
Just too much of fiber is unlikely to cause black stools however fiber containing food like beet roots can cause black to reddish stools.
Hope this answers your questions
