Posted on Wed, 9 Mar 2016
Question: Hi, my baby is 35 days old and has oral thrush. He is under medication for past 4 days (vitazyme drops and clotrimazole drop for topical application). I had nipple crack and nipple thrush from 10th day of my delievery. I am expressing milk and giving him. Currently I stopped giving expressed milk due to oral thrush .. Please suggest if I can start direct breast feeding now ? Or should I wait until his thrush gets cleared ?

Brief Answer:
Oral thrush in newborn

Detailed Answer:
Oropharyngeal candidiasis (OPC)/oral thrush is common in neonates from contact with the organism in the breast. OPC is usually self-limited in the healthy newborn infant and your baby is already under treatment with antifungal drops (clotrimazole).
You can start direct breast feeding if your nipple is free from thrush.
Otherwise continue expressed breast milk feeding.

Thank you for your reply. I tried direct feeding today, he is not latching like before and sucking milk like before..Did he forget how to latch as I dint feed him directly for past 10 days ? My nipple cracks have healed, but I am getting burning sensation when I feed him directly today. Does this burning sensation due to his oral thrush ? Should I still try giving him directly by apply any anti fungal cream (miconazole nitrate) after every feed or should I express until his infection gets cleared. Am worried if he will forget direct breast feeding. I also started with nan pro 1 due to insufficient milk. Please suggest.

Brief Answer:
Oral thrush in newborn

Detailed Answer:
To break the cycle of infection, you need to continue expressed breast milk feed till oral thrush resolves with clotrimazole and multivitamin drops. You need not apply anti fungal cream each time you feed your baby as it will give extra dosage.
As the baby grows its sucking improves. Oral thrush is likely to resolve soon and normal breast feeding can be started.
Nan Pro 1 Infant Formula can be used as breast milk supplementation.
