What Causes Pain Around Navel And Under The Ribs Of A Teenager?

default
Posted on Wed, 6 Apr 2016
Question: My 14 year old son has pain about 2 inches to the right of his belly button, and pain on his side (like "stitches" from running a lot), and pain under his ribs on the right that hurts when he takes full breaths. He is still walking, but not fast and not moving a ton. He had a lacrosse game last night but doesn't remember getting hurt, and the pain started mid-day at school sitting in class. The spot under his ribs is tender when he pushes on it. He isn't constipated, and ate pizza for dinner. He isn't nauseous, and no fever. No other symptoms apparently.

Brief Answer:
muscle strain, analgesic gel / cream / spray

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome.
I have gone through your query.
I think it is due to muscle strain, sometimes while playing this occurs and goes unnoticed as children are busy playing. In the absence of fever, cough, you need not to worry much about it.

I would like to know if there is redness in and around the area where it hurts and
From when is he having this problem?

If the muscle has strained, it will heal in a couple of days, can apply cold compresses to the painful area. If it takes much longer, I'd recommend to application of - warm clothing - local analgesic cream or gel / spray like diclofenac gel - repeated massaging of the painful area.
Avoid exercises and outdoor activities for a week.

If no improvement within a week and if you notice any unusual skin problems locally or other abdominal symptoms, I'd suggest you to consult your physician for further evaluation.

This provisional advice provided by me is based entirely on the input provided to me. I would suggest examination by the doctor.

Hope this helps.
Take care.
