default
Posted on Tue, 17 Mar 2015
Question: HI DOC, MY HANDS REALLY HURT, ESPECIALLY MY FOREFINGER ON MY RIGHT HAND, IT HURTS AT THE TIP ESPECIALLY AND I KNOW ARTHRITIS MIGHT BE INVOLVED, BUT THE WHOLE FINGER, NOT JUST THE JOINT, REALLY HURTS, THE LAST 4 MONTHS. I GOT A SHOT IN THE FINGER FROM MY ARTHRITIS DOCTOR WITH NO RELIEF. I TAKE BLOOD PRESSURE MEDS AND CRESTOR, AND COUMADIN FOR AORTIC VALVE REPLACEMENT. SO---I WAS WONDERING IF ALL THESE MEDS MIGHT BE CAUSING THIS DISCOMFORT

Brief Answer:
Coumadin can cause finger or joint pain

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I have studied your case and you are right in thinking that it is adverse effect of Coumadin. This drug causes pain in finger through various mechanism. Most common can be due to dislodgement of an emboli.
You have not mentioned if your finger is cynosed or discolored. I would suggest you to avoid any more injection.
You need to see your doctor, get your INR. You might need a dose adjustment. Also get an x ray of the hand. It will show if there is any arthritic changes in your hand.
Hot water fomentation will be helpful for you.
Let me know if you want to ask any other questions.
thanks
