Question: Hello, Since last Wednesday after dinner My body seemed to go into a severe cramping episodes which felt like childbirth labor specifically, my calves, thighs, back, stomach arms. I had chances to do intermittent breaths between each attack. calves, went first, then thighs, up my back and around to be lower region. The next day I went to doctor she said that I more than likely had potassium and magnesium problems, she put me on magnesium 400 mg. 2 x day. As of today all of the muscles that cramped and SOOO sore and very tender. I cant lift anything heavier than my purse and even that and standing for any length of time 10-15-20 minutes the cramps that I experience last week return. Between cramping episodes My body tremors from it seems the shock of the cramps. Since typing this my arms aare so very sore and it hirts to even life my arms off my desk. Im having extreme headaches sinnce this first started daily getting worse. My jaw must have clenched so tightly my tongue is sore from my teeth grating up against it. What could be happening to be. I called my doc today and they never called me back. what should I do??

Brief Answer:
Electrolyte imbalance likely.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
There are different possible causes for the symptoms that you are experiencing. One of the potential causes is hypothyroidism which is a low level of thyroid hormone. This is a hormone that plays an important part in the metabolism of the body.
In addition to hypothyroidism, electrolyte imbalance (levels checked by blood tests) and excess activity can result in muscle spasms.

In addition to the physical causes of your discomfort, it is possible for physical complaints to be worsened by anxiety or stress.

Muscular spasms can be treated by (1) treating the underlying cause (2) keeping yourself well hydrated. Have plenty of fresh fruit juices. (3) stretching the muscles involved (4) the use of anti inflammatory medication such as ibuprofen, cataflam with meals provided there are no contraindications to their use (5) a muscle relaxant may be necessary

It may be best, if possible to visit your doctor for a thorough assessment and treatment plan.

I hope this answers your query.

I am a Type 2 diabetic, managed as well as I can. I take fast and slow acting insulins. plus a tablet called invocana. I also have hypothroidism. Ive had that since my 24th birthday, I am now 54. Dosages have been changed throughout the years I am up to .225 each day except Saturdays and Sundays. Doc checked my A1C and blood sugar, A1c was a little high 705 and blood sugar was good at 103. She was supposed to check potassium and magnesium, would that be the electrolyte test that you are talking about? She has prescribed at prescription anti inflammatory called Mokic. Don't know if that the actual spelling. Thanks for trying to help. If there is something that you can add to this new mix of explanations, I would appreciate it. I will do what you ask as well. Thank you. Ill await your reply.

Brief Answer:
Taking a multivitamin will also help.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
By serum electrolyte tests I do mean potassium and magnesium and calcium levels. The muscle spasms can be due to nerve degeneration caused by long standing diabetes. Medicines like pregabalin and methylcobalamin supplements can also help you.
You can start taking a multivitamin supplement till then.
Hope my answer is helpful.
