What Causes Painful Wrist After A Growth Plate Fracture?

default
Posted on Thu, 19 Mar 2015
Question: Daughter 14 years old fell on October 26, 2014 on outstretched arm had a growth plate fracture. Was in a cast for 6 weeks. Had problems with range of motion in arm after cast came off. Orthopedic ordered physical therapy. Tried for a few weeks. Last week it became very painful in her wrist. She can not bend it or pick anything up and it throbs. It has been 4 months since original injury.
Orthopedic ordered MRI and got the results today. (See Report) According to the MRI there are tears. Are the tears from the fall or could they be from the therapy? Wouldn't they have healed by now? I am not understanding the results and what the treatment would be based on the findings of the MRI at this point. Would she have to go back in to a cast again for it to try and heal on it's own or would she need surgery for this?
Thank you for your time....

Brief Answer:
She has chronic sprain. Likely to heal by itself.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query

I'm Dr Sudhir Kumar

I have gone through your query and understand your concern. MRI finding shows chronic ligaments sprain. It seems to be due to original injury. Usually it must have healed till now. It will gradually heal itself. No operation is reguired. At present rest to wrist ( wrist brace can be worn) icing and analgesic such as ibuprofen and controlled excercises are the treatment required.

Second problem is of ganglion cyst. Injury may be cause of this. Again its treatment is rest and analgesic such as ibuprofen for pain relief. It may be aspirated by wide bore needle under aseptic conditions. Alternatively it be removed by surgery.

You can discuss with your doctor about it.

Hope your query get answered. If you have any clarification then I will be happy to help you.

Wishing you a good health.
Take care.
