Question: I have mucus in my stools. Do I need to have that checked or is it not a problem. I'm taking a probiotic and Medamucil. I am 75 yr old and the problem with the mucus has been happening for several months

Brief Answer:
For how long have you been taking medamucil?

Detailed Answer:
Hi am thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this mucus in that you have reported in your stool. If you have been taking medamucil for long, then this is the most likely the cause of your mucus in stool. I will like to know for how long you have been taking it and the dosage. I will like to factor this in before making any conclusions. Also, I will like to know when was the last time you had a colonoscopy done and what were the results.

I hope to hear from you before concluding on this and making a recommendation for whether to get this checked out now or to try some simple dietary and lifestyle modifications at this time.

I started Medamucil roughly 6 month ago sort of off and on because of very soft stools sometimes with little or no control. I knew I wasn't getting enough fiber because my appetite is not real good so tried the Medamucil and have taken it regularly for about 3 months. My last colonoscopy was several years ago and two polups were removed that had been there in the previous colonoscopy. No cancer.

Brief Answer:
Please, reduce the dose of metamucil first!

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I have a high suspicion that this drug is the root cause of this of this mucus. I will suggest you reduce the dose and let's monitor this condition a little longer. If it makes no difference, then we are going to do some tests.

Colonoscopy is advised every 5-10years. If you have exceeded this interval, it may be reasonable to start planning for another.

Let me know if this is a plan you would like to try at this time.
