What Causes Rashes On Both Sides Of Inner Thigh During Pregnancy?

default
Posted on Tue, 11 Aug 2015
Question: Hi there, I am 6 weeks pregnant and have a rash on both sides of my inner thighs. It started as a little purplish itchy bump on each side of my inner thighs. Now it is quite large on both sides and is oozing a clearish liquid. I have been in to see my doctor two days ago and she gave me some cortisone cream which provides temporary relief but area is only getting larger. I do not seem to be getting any other symptoms other than the side affects from the antibiotics she prescribed me. I have done quite a bit of research online but cannot seem to yield any results. Rash is ONLY on my inner thighs.
I looked at pictures of yeast infections and my rash doesn't appear to be like a yeast infection. As I mentioned in my first question, it is ONLY on my inner thighs and only itchy where the rash is.

The rash started out on both sides of my inner thighs halfway down my leg. It looked and felt like a big bug bite. By the next day it was three times the size, extremely itchy with purplish center and starting to ooze in the center.. It is red except for the purple center and is raised. It is also turning leathery. Now, it is half my legs with the purple center expanding as well as the red perimeter.

Brief Answer:
Candidal Intertrigo; Topical Antifungals and antifungal dusting powder

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thank you for writing to us

I have read your query and I am of the opinion that this rash is Intertrigo, which is inflammation of body folds.
Candida/yeast is the usual cause of intertrigo; moisture (due to sweat) trapped between thigh folds and heat favoring candidal growth.

Cortisone is just a plain steroid which would help, though only partially.

If I was the treating doctor I would suggest that you apply a topical antifungal e.g Clotrimazole 1% cream preferably one which is in combination with a mild topical steroid i.e beclomethasone dipropionate 0.025%.

Since underlying cause is occlusive conditions that exist between groin folds which trap moisture and heat, therefore, using an antifungal dusting powder e.g clotrimazole dusting powder, in groin folds will keep folds dry and discourage candidal growth.

I would not suggest any oral antifungals because you are pregnant.

Regards
