What Causes Seizure And Sound While Breathing After Child Birth?

default
Posted on Mon, 24 Aug 2015
Question: During the first trimester of my pregnancy, it was found that i had placenta praevia and by the 7th month Doctor confirmed that placenta had shifted up and now it was no more a complication. I had a planned cesarean as per Doctor's suggestion on 29th XXXXXXX 2015 during which the incision was unexpectedly made on the placenta. Due to this I suffered heavy bleeding while my baby was facing breathing issue and was groaning, and he was shifted immediately to Sick Newborn Care Unit. The next day baby developed seizures and was put on ventilator. After 8 days he was discharged from the hospital. Since then he had no issues except slight sound while breathing for which Doctors assured that it was normal and will resolve by itself within few months. On 28th day after his birth, the baby developed seizures again for few seconds and was immediately taken to Pediatrician for which he suggested MRI. The reports are still awaited.
Except the MRI report, I am attaching other related reports.
Please advice correct treatment for my newborn.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX

I have gone through all your question and the attached repost. I completely understand your concerns. Most likely, your baby has suffered an insult at the time of delivery leading to hypoxia ischaemic encephalopathy. This occurs when brain doesn't get enough oxygen at birth or immediately after birth due to reasons such as delayed cry, acute blood loss etc. The seizures occur as a result of this and needs to be properly controlled by anti epileptics like Gardinal.

MRI brain will help in the evaluation. I would also recommend you to go for a complete neurological evaluation of baby with electroencephalogram (EEG). He needs to be started again on Gardenal as its the first line of management. In case, the seizure recur, the dose may be increase or other drug such as phenytoin may be added.

You need to get your baby evaluated at regular follow ups for neurological assessment and development.
Also, hearing and vision needs to be tested by BERA and Visually evoked response Testing.

Don't worry as many a times with regular management, we see baby's developing perfectly fine.
Hopefully this will help you. I would be glad to help you with any further questions.

Take care
