What Causes Sensitivity To Noise After Thyroid Removal To Treat Cancer?

Posted on Thu, 9 Feb 2017
Question: A female friend of mine, 80 y.o. had thyroid cancer and had the thyroid removed 5 years ago. She now complains of sensitivity to noise. Is there a link between thyroid surgery and noise sensitivity -- and if so could you please be so kind as to give me some online medical references that I may print out and show to parties involved in her well-being.

Thank you for your guidance and for the references . . .

Brief Answer:
No there is no relation

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query.

There is no link between thyroid cancer, thyroid surgery and noise sensitivity.

However, if she is hypothyroid (not enough thyroid hormone supplements) then this can be an issue. But I am sure her doc monitors her TSH levels to adjust the dose regularly. If not, then it should be looked into.

Hope this helps.

Thank you for your answer. So are you saying if there is not enough thyroid hormone then she would be sensitive to noise? But if the thyroid gland has been surgically removed, then it's my understanding that there would no longer be any naturally occurring thyroid hormone. And thus, if she wasn't taking the thyroid supplements then in fact the noise would be an issue. What is TSH?

Brief Answer:
thyroid supplements to be taken

Detailed Answer:
After complete thyroid removal, there is no thyroid hormone in the body. It has to be supplemented. If supplementation is not adequate, it can cause various problems, one of which is noise in ears.

TSH is a test in blood which shows if suplementation of thyroid hormone is adequate or not.
