What Causes Severe Pain And Swelling In The Gums Near The Superior Frenulum?

Question: Hi,
I have been wearing my upper denture for about 3 years. Now, I am having severe pain and swelling on my gums near the superior frenulum. Also, I noticed the gums have grown into the shape of the upper denture and have crevices where the change of the gums took place.
What can I do about the severe pain? Is it normal to have deep crevices in the upper gum from my dentures?

Brief Answer:
epulis, smoothen denture borders, medication

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your query. I have gone through your query.
As far as the pain in the gums and formation of a flap at the junction of the denture and gums (near the sulcus) is concerned, it can be because of the sharp borders of the denture causing irritation to the gums and vestibule. As you have completed 3 years, there will be resorption of the alveolar ridge, even this also results in impingement of the denture over the gums(loss of vertical height of alveolar ridge). This irritation results in over growth of the gums called epulis fissuratum.

Nothing to be panic. Consult a prosthodontist and get it evaluated. If any sharp borders are there, get it smoothened. If the epulis is large then it has to excised surgically. Right now you can stop using denture till the pain susides and you can use topical anesthetic like lignocaine and topical analgesic like choline salicylate for the pain.

These are the possible diagnosis and treatment plan based on the description of your problem.
If you can upload the images of the area of interest then I can give you exact diagnosis and treatment plan.
I hope I have answered your query. If you have any queries you can reply me back.
Take care.
