What Causes Severe Pain Behind Ear?

default
Posted on Fri, 4 Sep 2015
Question: I have had 2MRI's with XXXXXXX after having a severe pain just behind my R ear stopping in the center. The results I was told: chronic sinusitis, 3 cysts on pubertary gland. I have changes in vision & hearing, ears ring, can't keep my balance, vertigo, nausea, taste of metal in my mouth, migraine headaches, toothaches, weaknes in hands, some numbness in both limbs shifting from one to the other, some crazy shaking but not what I would call a (I can't spell it..sees-year) sudden anger, lashing out, crying jags. My GP will not talk to me, all of a sudden my oncologist sets me up for a CT. I am a breast cancer survivor of 4 years. Do these "cysts" cause all these symptoms? Ohni forgot, short term memory is gone, can't bring words forward, unable to spell. I use to love to read. Do you guess (hypothesis) that I have a brain tumor? Oh yeah, add I can't sleep any more than 2 hours a night. Also flashes of complete darkness in upper right hand corner of right eye!

Brief Answer:
more information needed.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for using HCM.

I have read your question and understand your concerns.

In order to have a better understanding of your concerns, there is need for the complete MRI reports to be uploaded and, if you can some pictures too.

Brain cysts could explain some of your symptoms, but exact location and Radiologyst interpretation needed.

I need to know about medicaments you are currently using too.

Pain behind ear could be related to neuropathy, or occipital neuralgia.

Bad taste and memory problems could be side effects of drugs you use, so I'm awaiting for more information.,,,,,

I do not have access to my MRI 's & no way to upload them as I do not have an USB port on this iPad. I do have chemo induced neuropathy. I take 10/325 hydra condon, 15mg morfine sulf extended, x3 ea for break through pain & 100mg Lyrica x 3. I also take 60mg Prozac, 100mg lamital, 60mg dexilant (stomach meds) each day. I also have a script for Klonapan .1mg up 2 x2. I was recently given imitrex 100mg prn & meclizine 25mg x3 but usually only take 1 r 2. Also .phenagan 25mg prn. I have been taking the opiates app 3 years. I had to miss my last chemo treatment due to the neuropathy. The dr told me if I took the last treatment I would be n a wheelchair the rest of my life. I have never had any type of reaction to the current meds. I notice vision-hearing loss, unable to pull words forward, STM loss, balance problems before the hot steel spears of pain started in my brain. So it looks as though I have just blown 35.00 that I did not have as I went into debt to pay the fee. I am sorry. I am so mixed up! I have all these emotions of hurt & anger, lashing out at people & I don't understand why! I pray about it every day. I am pushing myself to be aware of this behavior, however I don't always keep everything in check. Please help me! Tell me what you THINK it could be, also want to mention that my hair has become very dry & brittle and my skin has become very dry! My face has honestly aged 10 years or more in the las 6weeks. I drink plenty of fluids & stay well hydrated! Help me! Thank you. XXXX
This is how bad my memory is, I have forgotten what I wanted to add to my reply! I feel crazy! And I have this crazy sensation in my head! It's so frustrating. My sister died with an inoperate brain tumor.
Now I remember! Lately, I have the feeling that I am lactating? Like my milk has come down & my baby is ready to nurse even though both breasts have been removed. My surgeon told me there would be NO reconstructive surgery. The tumor had already attached itself to my chest wall.

Brief Answer:
I don't think it is a malignant tumor.

Detailed Answer:
Hello again XXXXXXX

Sorry to hear what you you had to go through.

MRI report is indispensable to have a correct answer about the nature of the lesions found in your brain.

However, if there was any tumor, MRI is the best imaging tool to diagnose it.

Cysts of the pituitary ( not pubertary okay?) could explain the milk production sensation, blood prolactin level should be measured as a complementary test.

If cysts compress optic nerves (again MRI report needed), your vision problems could be related to cysts.

Neuropathy as a side effect of chemotherapy could explain symptoms such numbness, limbs weakness, headaches and skin changes.

Neuropathy symptoms could be improved (partially) by increasing the dose of Lyrica.

Behavior and memory changes could be related to brain mass loss due to all these drugs you are using, (again MRI results needed), or could be related to stress you are experiencing, a Psychologist evaluation needed in this case.

About your main question, I don't think lesions found in MRI are malignant tumor, I think they are benign cysts found in a MRI done for another reason ( headaches).

In conclusion, I recommend to use just one painkiller ( hydrocodone eg. ), increasing dose of Lyrica ( XXXXXXX dose 600 mg./day ) and to have a Psychologist evaluation about mood changes.

These issues should be discussed with your treating Doctor.

Hope you found the answer helpful.

Wishing you good health.

Thank you for your answers to my questions? First, thank you for correcting me on my spelling. I was at one time, before BC (before Breast Cancer or Before Chemo), a champion speller. It is very frustrating to have the word you want to use in a conversation when suddenly your mind goes blank. Then when having remembering the word, unable to spell it! I realize I put you in a "hands tied behind your back" position without the results of the MRI. For this I apologize. I made an appointment with my family doctor to discuss the results of MRI and what to expect with these cysts. He would not look me in the eye and told me any other questions that I may have to refer to my oncologist. He did check my lungs & heart with his (another word I know, but can not bring forwarded. It starts with an S, one part goes into doctor's ear, the other, on the patient's chest, neck or abdomen) the waived me off with something to help with the vertigo. Having losing all 3 of my sisters to some
type of cancer, one in particular a brain tumor, me as a BC suvivor, I have been very close to hysteria. With all that said, would you e able to help me to know what to expect as a results of having the cysts or do I direct them to my oncologist? Or do I go back to my GP and say "Hey, give me some of your time and explain things for me"? Also, you omitted the morphine in the pain management of the neuropathy. I would like to understand why? Would you explain the effects of long term use of morphine other than the obvious, that it would take more medicine to treat any pain as I am building up a tolerance to the morphine? Thank you for your help! Worry never changes one thing, however, in this world of instant gratification, it's so very hard for me to "wait". Thanking you in advance for the answers I continue to have.....sincerely, XXXX
I hope the above made sense to you. I feel helpless and don't know which doctor to discuss what with!

Brief Answer:
You need to discuss your concerns with a Neurosurgeon.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome back XXXXXXX

You should discuss the MRI results about brain cysts and their effects on your health with a Neurosurgeon.

The "S" thing you refer is a stethoscope.

It is a evaluating tool, but not sufficient to evaluate tumor progression, imaging studies needed such CT scan that you will have soon.

You can use Morphine too, for pain management, I recommend only one painkiller, morphine shows more prominent side effects such breathing depression and chances of dependence are higher.

Hope I've been of help.

Best regards.

Maybe it's just me, but you come across just a bit condescending. I did not say that my doctor used the stethoscope to evaluate the progressing of a tumor! I am trying to get the point across that no one is really listening to me! So, let me make sure I understand you correctly, am I to ask my oncologist to refer me to a Neurosurgeon to get the answere to the questions I have concerning the MRI results? Thank you.
