What Causes Shortness Of Breath And Pain In The Chest?

default
Posted on Wed, 18 Oct 2017
Question: This has been going on for 6 years, gaining in frequency. Under exertion could be a little or a lot, I get a shortness of breath, a pain in the middle of my chest and need to urinate immediately. The urgency is the same whether I go a table spoon or a quart. Once I urinate all of the symptoms go away. I have seen 3 Urologists, a Cardiologist, a Nephrologist, a breathing specialist and several general practitioners. So far no one has been able to figure it out. It seems like they are trying to treat each symptom separate, but they all come at the same time and all leave at the same time.

Brief Answer:
possible COPD, prostate & associated anxiety problem .

Detailed Answer:
Hi Gray.waltrip.
Thanks for using health care magic for your health concern. I have read your query & understand your concern.
The duel combination of shortness of breath, pain in middle chest & urinary frequency could be-
- COPD... a chronic pulmonary disease with affection of heart- shortness of breath can lead to suffocation & urgency of urination.
- Heart problem leading to less oxygenation of body- - shortness of breath..weakness of left heart ( causing heart symptoms like fast heart beats) , psychological stress & urgency of urination.
-You old kidney problem/ age wise prostate problem has started causing compression on urinary bladder causing urgency & associated psychological anxiety( out of fear of not reaching washroom in time ) causes short breath& pain in chest.
* you had already been examined ( ?investigated ) for kidney problem/ heart problem.
I feel you should be thoroughly investigated on above lines. Exclusion of individual condition would lessen the range of causes & certain conclusion would be possible.
Specially COPD in case you have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease ( Bronchitis/ asthma/ chronic smoking )- consultation of a general physician for primary evaluation followed by needful reference to chest physician & urologist to evaluate prostate condition & psychological aid by counselling/ medication - to manage anxiety problem remain( considering that kidney/ heart was declared normal by experts before.)
I hope that answers your query. Any follow up query is welcome.
Thanks.

The COPD has only been for 3 years, this has been happening for 6 years. Tests have been done on my heart ie; electrocardiogram, nuclear stress test. my heart is fine. Kidney's are working fine. My prostate was scoped with a camera and deemed to be enlarged but not a factor, I take Finasteride 5 mg per day. These 3 symptoms occur in the order of shortness of breath, pain in the chest and immediate urination urge, they all happen within 2 seconds, always in that order, after the urge then anxiety sets in.

Brief Answer:
should concentrate on COPD.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX waltrip,
Thanks for follow up query.. with confirmation of having COPD ... for last 3 years. Any cause of difficult breathing ( allergic bronchitis, asthma/severe anemia/ pulmonary high blood pressure / Digestive problems with bloating... short breath.. chest pain) is followed by urge to urinate urgently,
- Though COPD had been diagnosed since last 3 years... recurrent breathing trouble & short breath..(.can cause these symptoms in severe attacks.)... go on for few years & terminate in COPD .
Following factors would add to the short breathing.
- The medicine Finasteride in over dose can cause breathlessness to add to the symptoms of COPD.
- If you have anemia... that can again cause breathlessness for full filling oxygen demand & add to symptoms of allergy/ copd
* In the light of new information provided I would suggest to restrict to fully investigation for COPD / digestive issues if any/ dosage of prostate medicine / blood hemoglobin level.
Hope that clears your doubt. Any follow up query is welcome.
Thanks
