What Causes Small Red And Itchy Bumps All Over The Skin?
Question: Hi there,
I'm a 27 year old caucasian male, about 165 lbs, 5'10". I live in Colorado. I am investigating possible causes of small, red, itchy bumps all over my skin. I just had one of the worst cold/flus I've had in years (didn't get a flu all winter), could barely get out of bed, dizzy, headache, high fever, sore throat, cough etc. I still feel severely fatigued and some cough but better than before. However, I have these itchy bumps, mostly all over everything but my face, hands, and feet (so many on neck, torso, upper/lower legs and arms). Their density is as follows: about 4-6 on my right forearm, about 25 on my stomach. I looked everywhere for bed bugs, fleas, etc, no luck, already had chicken pox. I also have a weird auto-immune type condition from many severe parasite infections 8 years ago that results in lower energy and nausea, typically. So I'm thinking flu+weak system from chronic illness --> immune system out of wack and lots of bodily toxins --> little red pimple-like things on skin that itch. How do I treat them (esp. itchiness) and feel better from the fatigue? Or am I wrong about why they are there?

I am pleased to be able to assist you and I understand that it must be terrible having to go through this kind of condition.
It is also tempting to relate any subsequent condition to an earlier chronic conditions such as your known immune diseases (which is logical). Now, reading through your post-in my opinion- I believe you might be having acute urticaria post viral flu infection. A viral infection such as a cold or flu can trigger an urticarial rash in some people. (You react to the virus.) A mild viral infection which causes few other symptoms is probably a common trigger of an urticarial rash that develops without an apparent cause.
Most flu infections are usually due to viral causes and usually subside on their own. Your rashes may just be a reaction or allergy to the virus that caused the flu.
In order to get rid of the itches, you might want to consider taking antihistamines such as chlropheniramine or pheniramine. Topical corticosteroids such as betamethasone cream can also help but you will have to apply all over the body.
