What Causes Sore Throat, Laryngitis And Post Nasal Drip After Taking Lamictal?

Question: Hi, I hope I am asking the right specialist. My symptoms are so varied I may need an ent. I have an appointment with my family doctor in the morning but feel pretty sure he will be referring to one or the other. Symptoms are: off and on sore throat varying from mild discomfort to extreme pain. This weekend it was so bad it hurt to turn my neck. The pain encompassed the length of the throat area. I have developed a raspy hoarse voice pretty constantly to complete laryngitis as this weekend with the extreme sore throat. My mouth and tongue burn almost constantly to the point a soda or mouthwash feels like alcohol on a open wound! My lips even burn at times. I guess the next is where you come in I get sudden nausea and may gag sometimes for hours or even sudden vomiting. I threw up 5 times today. I would feel ok then just get suddenly sick and throw up. I have post nasal drip very bad as well. I don't know what is causing what, the nasal drip causing the vomiting, or the drip causing the vomiting. I sometimes feel like my throat is closing up. It only last about 15 to 20 seconds, but I can't swallow or breath. It is like my throat just stops working for a bit. It is frightening. Current medicines are cymbalta, lamictal for bipolar disorder, estradiol, and a mild xanax I only take when I have to leave my house. What tests do you think my doc will order? Which type of specialist do you recommend? Sorry for the long history, but my symptoms are weird!

Brief Answer:
You are having side effect of medication you are having with throat infecti

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for the query.

I have read your query , reviewed your medications and understand your concern.

As per your clinical history it appears that you are having symptoms due to combination of Post Nasal discharge + Pharyngitis-laryngitis + GERD ( gastroesophageal reflux disease ) + side effect medication you are taking .

Cymbalta ( dry mouth , burning ) , Lamictal ( dry mouth, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, sore throat ) , Estradiol ( nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps ) & xanax (difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat) cause side effect you are having.

If I were your treating Doctor for this case , I would advice
Consult ENT specialist & your psychologist for this side effect .

Endoscopy of throat & larynx required .

You will get relief .

Hope this information helpful to you .If you have any further questions I will be happy to help.
Regards.

Thank you so much for the reply. I just got back from my doctor appointment and he said pretty much the same thing. He is not ordering tests at this time though. He gave me a prescription for acid reflux, a prescription for the post nasal drip which is a prescription allergy pill and nasal spray. He recommended a bland diet in small meals, elevate myself at night with a bed wedge or blocks under the front of the bed to elevate it. He said my throat and vocal cords are swollen and inflamed. He suggested I speak to my psychiatrist about possible side effects from my medicine. I am prone to severe side effects with my bipolar medicines and other medicines. One in past caused seizures, and the list goes on. We thought I was doing ok on these but will discuss with her my next appointment which is next week. Thank you very much. I wish you a great day .

Brief Answer:
Consult your psychiatrist for modification of drugs

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for the follow up query.

If I were your treating Doctor for this case , I would advice the same medical line of management to treat allergic Post Nasal discharge (PND) + Pharyngitis-laryngitis + GERD .

Gargle with water 20 mins after nasal spray use to remove any spray coming to throat .

Consult your psychiatrist for modification of drugs as soon as possible.

Wish you good health.

Regards.
