Brief Answer:
He is still young he can change his lifestyle with regular medications

Detailed Answer:
Dear friend, Greeting from HCM. i understand your concern.
As he is now started on medications he needs regular monitoring for a month with tablet. Also get his fasting and postprandial glucose with HbA1c done now.
Later let him follow a proper diet chart.
He need to exercise at least walk an hour / day. He can still play out door games.
Let him practice meditation and yoga it helps.
Excess work stress could be avoided,
Do not give him excess carbohydrates. he should take more of proteins and green leafy vegetables.
Take Millets in boiled form or the breads prepared out of it like ragi, bajra, sorghum, wheat etc., are very good source of micronutrients required for the action of insulin. Take more of protein rich food, like egg white, fish is good source of omega 3 & 6 fatty acids.
