What Causes Swollen Eyelids And Loss Of Consciousness After Head Injury?

default
Posted on Mon, 24 Aug 2015
Question: I fell and hit the back of my head 2.5 days ago on cement. Loss consciousness x 20-30sec(per RN friend). I was confused when I came to but after 10 minutes seemed alert( I have no recollection of this), my friend thought I was okay so she told me to go to bed. I awoke the next day with a 3"x 2" bruise on the back of my head, a headache and moderate pressure behind my eyes( resolved with ibuprofen). No nausea, no confusion, slight dizziness if I moved my head too quickly. Assumed I had a concussion from hitting my head.
The next morning ( so 36 hours later) awoke with both top eyelids purple and swollen ( I did not hit the front of my head) no longer have headache, moderate pressure behind eyes( resolved w ibuprofen) . Vision normal. No bruising behind my ears.
Awoke today still have purple eyelids . Mild pressure behind eyes. No headache.

It has been 65 hours since I hit the back of my head, since my symptoms seam to be improving do I need to see a Dr? I fell fine, but am concerned about the purple eye lids.

Thank you for your time

Brief Answer:
You Can consult a doctor

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear,
I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.
Head injury with loss of consciousness should be evaluated with CT scan . As other symptoms like seizure, bleeding through nose or ear, vomiting, unbearable headache, focal neurological deficit is not there so possibility of severe injury is low.
Discoloration of eyelids without any redness of eye or visual loss suggest possibility of injury and bleeding in scalp which has percolated in eyelid soft tissue.
You can upload the picture for better assessment .
you can consult a doctor too.
Hope you found the answer helpful.

Thanks, I am attaching a picture. I have had no bleeding from ears or nose. No clear fluids from ears or nose. The whites of my eyes are not red and my vision is normal ( i do have mild pressure behind my eyes) No seizure, no nausea or vomiting ,no facial deficits, only a mild headache the next day,
I have poor insurance and dont want to go to Dr and get CT scan if not absolutely necessary.

Brief Answer:
You can postpone visit and just be watchful

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear,
The discoloration on eyelids are not typical but you can just wait and follow if it resolves with time.
The need to visit a doctor is not mush at this juncture but may be required if some symptoms worsens.
Just take local pain reliever cream for back of the head injury or take paracetamol when needed.
