Question: Hi I had a tongue operation in late May - it was not cancer but now I have a very furry and tingling tongue. Saw my surgeon yesterday and he said it wasn't from the operation. Its very annoying what could be the problem?
Ive tried thrush medication, plus numerous mouthwashes but nothing is working

Brief Answer:
have to get blood investigations.

Detailed Answer:
Hi and welcome to healthcaremagic,

Tingling of the tongue most commonly occurs when there is damage to the nerve during oral surgery or dental procedures. But such tingling will appear soon after surgery and not months after the surgery. So, surgery as a cause is ruled out in your case.

Other common causes are vitamin B 12 deficiency, herpes infection and calcium deficiency, stroke, multiple sclerosis.

Please meet with your physician quickly. You will most probably require blood investigations to look for Vitamin B 12 deficiency and calcium deficiency.

Feel free to follow up,

I do have B12 deficiency and have injections every 3 months. I still have a nerve pain near the surgery area. I also have heamochromotis and have blood taken now every 6 months. Is there something I can use to relieve this discomfort? I am desperate I cant get any any answers here in Australia

Brief Answer:
get the blood tests done again

Detailed Answer:
Hi and welcome,

I would advise you to see your doctor again and get the blood tests again to get to the root of the problem. Please get B12, Calcium and Vitamin D levels done. Further tests may be needed based on the results.

The pain from the surgery will go away soon , do not worry about that.

Till then you can start supplements of calcium and vitamin D. I am positive that these vitamin and mineral supplement should be available over the counter. But see your doctor and insist on a diagnosis.
