What Causes Vaginal Bleeding Followed By Missed Periods In A 50 Year Old Woman?

default
Posted on Sat, 29 Aug 2015
Question: I'm 50 years old and have not had a period for a year and a half. I assumed it was menopause but never had any harmone tests to be sure. Last week I had what I thought was just spotting, and it turned out to be just like a regular period and lasted 5 days. The gynecologist cannot see me for a month. Should I make an appointment with my primary doctor in the mean time? How worried do I need to be about cancer, and what other conditions could it be?

Brief Answer:
This is menopause!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this bleeding that has created some fear in you. This is typical of menopause. Your age and the absence of menses for this while folioed by an unexpected flow is typical of events surrounding menopause. Blood tests are never den to confirm menopause unless in persons we think may be too young to get into menopause. There is no need to make and urgent appointment now. There is no need to get worried. report this to your OBGYN during your regular appointment which comes up in a month.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Thanks for using our services and do feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.
