What Causes Vomiting And Diarrhea After Eating Restaurant Food?

Question: My son, 22, college athlete, in top physical condition, ate a grilled chicken sandwich from Quiznos while at work last night. Within 45 minutes of eating, he was in the restroom throwing up! He went home and went to bed and had such severe stomach pain this morning, he missed workouts, which he NEVER does!!! He says he now has diarrhea and his stomach hurts in the top portion. I am unfamiliar with food poisoning. Could this be it?? If so, does he need to see a physician or get over the counter items?

Brief Answer:
it is gastroenteritis

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

It is food poisoning which may be related to viral or bacterial infection of the gastrointestinal tract.

Treatment mainly involves the following: (1) avoiding any significant solid food for at least 12 to 24 hours. If he eats, it would only come back out and would delay healing

(2)needs to avoid dehydration- the use of sports drinks like gatorade or oral rehydration solutions from the local pharmacy would be best.
These would replace not only the fluids he is losing from vomiting and diarrhoea but also the electrolytes that are being lost

It is very important that even though he may be thirsty from fluid loss that he starts out drinking only small amounts, if he drinks a lot, he will vomit. Initially use 1 tsp to 1 tbs every 5 minutes for an hour. If he tolerates this then the amount is increased slowly. If he vomits then need to start over with the small quantities

(3)Probiotics- probiotics have been shown to help speed up recovery from gastroenteritis. These can be obtained from yogurts or on their own from the pharmacy

(4)Agents such as pepto bismol would help with his nausea, stomach irritation (the top part of the abdomen is where stomach located and pain is due to gastritis) and diarrhoea

(5)When he has been vomit free for at least 6 hours and there is a reduction in stool frequency, he can start using very small amounts of dry solid food

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
