Posted on Fri, 3 Jul 2015
Question: My mother who is 59 years old is having the problem of pain in the lower legs starting from knees till foot since last December. She was suggested blood tests by local orthopediacian , that indicated deficiency in vitamin D and calcium. Also the X ray for the knees was done that indicated a slight gap in her left knee. She was prescribed calcium and vitamin D tablets which she is taking for the last six months. The current problem is that she faces weakness in legs and can neither stand for a long time on her legs nor walk long distances. She also faces difficulty climbing stairs. Please suggest. Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Regular knee exercise is very important.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for your query.

From the description it seems that your mother is suffering from osteoarthritis knee. All the problems you had described is due to this.
For this regular knee exercise is very important to strengthen the muscles around knee. She can learn these exercises from a physiotherapist.
Avoid squatting and stair climbing as much as possible.

Hope this helps you.

Warm regards.
