Herpes genitalis

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome back to healthcaremagic

I am Dr. Kakkar. I have gone through your query.

I would like to know whether, have you any history of genital ulcers/sores Or oral labial herpes (cold sores)?

hsv type 1&2 IgG positivity indicates that you have an infection but it does'nt confirm whether you have oro-labial herpes or genital herpes.

Herpes is quite common. In XXXXXXX 33.3% of individuals are seropositive for HSV-1.

Of course you can get married.

If indeed it is genital herpes, the only way genital herpes can get transmitted is through intimate sexual contact (unprotected genital to genital OR unprotected receptive oral sex).

In between episodes of herpes, it is less likely that you will pass on the virus, however, some virus will be present on the genital skin surface from time to time, although infrequently. So, there is a small chance that you may pass on the virus when you have sex even when you don't have a clinical episode of herpes. A clinical episode of herpes does increase the risk of transmission. Therefore it is advisable for you to have protected sex as much as possible.

Though the virus stays in the body for ever, herpes outbreaks are more common/frequent in those who have acquired the infection recently and therefore are more likely to transmit the virus to others (the viral shedding is higher during an episode of herpes as compared to someone who is clinically silent).

Once you get married, protective sex would still be advisable for both of you when you are not trying for a baby. However, whenever you decide to have a baby, there will definitely be some risk of transmitting the virus, no matter how less.

All these explanations apply provided you have genital herpes and not for oro-labial herpes.

Hope this helps

Brief Answer:
Herpes

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

As you have a history of cold sore, therefore most likely positive hsv type 1& 2 IgG is due to oro-labial herpes.

Moreover you don't have a history of genital lesions/sores.

Herpes is transmitted from person to person through direct, intimate contact. Therefore, you may transmit the virus to your wife through kissing and through performing oral sex on her (oro-genital route). The viral shedding is more during a clinical episode of herpes (cold sores). Therefore avoiding kissing during a clinical episode would decrease the risk of transmitting it to wife and baby.

Herpes is not life threatening.

hsv type 1 mostly causes oral herpes whereas hsv type 2 mostly causes genital herpes. However there are cases of oral hsv type 2 and genital hsv type 1 infections.

The exact etiology in your case can be determined by specific ELISA tests for hsv type 1 and hsv type 2.

Herpes is recurrent, the virus resides in the body throughout the life in the dorsal spinal root ganglion and from time to time may reactivate, multiply, travel down the nerve and produce lesions (cold sores)

Brief Answer:
Herpes testing

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

Yes, Type specific ELISA testing can distinguish between the type of hsv you have (1 or 2).

It is unlikely that your's was a false positive result Or future testing for specific hsv would give false positive result, since you have a history of cold sore and positive result is most likely to be due to oro-labial herpes (cold sore) rather than genital herpes.

If you and your wife remain faithful to each other, no way you both can get infected with HIV.

Brief Answer:
Herpes Labialis

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

Oro-labial herpes (cold sore) is very common. You don't need to worry. Take it easy
If you have an outbreak of cold sore, you can take an antiviral for that episode. e.g Valacyclovir 1000 mg, 2 tabs 12 hours apart for just 1 day. That's it.
