What Does Abnormal Sleep Record In An EEG Report Indicate?

Question: Hi,
My son is 2 years old. He recently had high fever which resulted in fits. He had the attack for around 1 min & was rushed to hospital. Fever was controlled there. Following this,we were asked to use Tab. Frissium 5 mg along with P250 syrup for 4-5 days. On 3rd day of getting fits attack, we went for an EEG as suggested by doctor. The report read as “Abnormal Sleep Record”. Then we visited a neurologist who asked to repeat EEG on 7th day of getting fits. We went for the test on 10th day. There is no change in the report. It again read as “Abnormal Sleep Record”. Does this indicate that my son is epileptic? Is this a life- long disorder? Please help me understand his condition & what are the precautions we have to take and about treatment? Thank You.

Brief Answer:
Most likely it is not an epilepsy.

Detailed Answer:
Hi Ms XXXXXXX

Thank you for posting your query.

I have noted your son's symptoms and would like to reassure you that your son most probably does not have epilepsy.

Based on the description, the diagnosis is febrile seizures, where fits occur in association with high fever. This is common between the ages of six months to six years and may affect about 10% of children. Most of these children do not develop epilepsy.

Abnormal EEG is most likely due to faulty techniques and machines. Therefore, I would ask you to repeat the EEG in a reputed hospital.

Only if a child has repeated fits without fever, we call the child as epileptic, so, your son is definitely not epileptic at this stage, whatever the EEG report shows!!

I hope my answer helps. Please get back if you have any follow up queries or if you require any additional information.

Wishing you good health,

Hello Dr. XXXXXXX

Thank you for your openion.

Two times EEG was performed at XXXXXXX Diagnostic Centre & both times it showed abnormal results. We visited a child neurologist recently and he advised to start Valparin & Neuromin-M syrup daily twice 2.5 ml each. He advised to use it for 2 years. Before starting the medication, he advised a Liver Function Test which was normal. When we asked about side effects, he told that childern can get jaundice by usage of Valparin. Please let us know your openion on the same. Are there any other side effects that we should be aware of? Are there any precautions we have to take? Please advice.

Brief Answer:
Valparin is safe.

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for getting back.
XXXXXXX diagnostic center is a good center.

Valparin is safe and there are usually no side effects, except as mentioned regarding liver.

Medicines should be continued on daily basis, as skipping of a dose may lead to seizures.

Best wishes,

Dr Sudhir Kumar MD DM (Neurology)
