Question: I am passing urine with light red colour for the last about 15 days. I tried paracetamol 500mg twice a day for 4days.It seemed to reduce the color. I am 85 years old male.in otherwise normal health. I am feeling it may increase again. once I stop paracetamol. Can I try using antibiotic like Azithromycin for a few days Please advise any other line of treatment.

Brief Answer:
Needs to be investigated

Detailed Answer:
Hi
I am Dr Mittal.
I have read your message.
I think I can help you.
First, paracetamol has nothing to do with red urine.
So you can definitely stop it.
Second, we need to find out why you have red urine.
The medicines that you mentioned are unlikely to cause red urine.
I would suggest the following tests- Serum PSA, Urine routine and culture, and Ultrasound abdomen.
The commonest causes of red urine are renal stones, infections and even drug/food pigment.
So we need to know why the symptom is present before treating it.
Third, there is no point of taking any antibiotics either unless it is proven to be an infection.
Meanwhile take plenty of fluids and monitor your urine output.
Please let me know the test reports and I will try to help you further thereafter.
Best of luck, Dr Mittal
