What Does My MRI Scan Report Indicate?

Question: on flair coronal imaging there are a number of punctate foci of increased t2 signal in the sub cortical white matter throughout the cerebral hemispheres the most conspicuous in the posterior right parietal lobe but unchanged from the previous exam.these may represent foci of gliosis or possibly

ischemic changes..stable foci of demyelinization should be considered as well.

in the flair coronal sequences there are multiple stable foci of increased t2 signal in subcortical white matter throughout the right and left hemisphere...areas of ischemia possibly related to long term migraines..a demyelinating process can not be entirely ruled out...

this is my mri...i also have no reflexes in my legs...pain and weakness in my leggs can hardly walk..can barely write do to the pain in my hands and arms..i have bladder and bowel trouble..i have very senitive smell and taste and hearing...gives me migrains..my eyes are very blurry..sometimes lights are dem and then bright...could this be ms

Brief Answer:
Your MRI scans do not show changes compatible with diagnosis of MS

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in details.
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a condition that is diagnosed based on imaging criteria followed internationally. The criteria for making a diagnosis based on MRI findings is called McDonald diagnostic criteria for MS.

As per this criteria the MRI findings have to satisfy conditions concerning dissemination of lesions in space or location and time when compared to an earlier MRI scan.

1. When we talk about locations, these abnormal areas on MRI have to be seen in two or more of the following areas
periventricular
juxtacortical
infratentorial
spinal cord

2. When we talk about time, there should be
(i) a new lesion when compared to a previous scan (irrespective of timing)
T2 bright lesion and/or gadolinium enhancing
(ii) presence of asymptomatic enhancing lesion and a non-enhancing T2 bright lesion on any one scan.

From your MRI scan findings, it is clearly mentioned that there is an old ischemic process (changes in brain due to reduced blood supply) or degeneration of nerves (demyelination) and the findings are unchanged over time.

Therefore, even though you might have symptoms which can be seen in MS, it is almost certain that MRI scan does not show features of MS as per diagnostic criteria. However there are findings which can be related to your symptoms keeping in mind migraine attacks which you might be having for a long time.

Even if it is not MS, please keep your doctors informed about your symptoms regularly and should there be any sudden progression of symptoms in the next few months then additional repeat imaging might be required.

Hope this answers your question. Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

Regards,
Dr.Vivek
