What Does My Lab Test Report Indicate?

Posted on Sat, 18 Jun 2016
Question: Recent ultrasound indicated dilation of the common bile duct. No obstructing mass lesion or choledocholithiasis. MRCP may be considered for further evaluation. Does this mean I have could cancer? Freaking out about the MRCP of what may be found. Last year, I had a CT scan indicated 4mm calcific density in the duoduem which may have been passed choledocholithiasis. Could this be case of gallstones the dilating the CBD as none were seen within my recent ultrasound? Really scared.

Brief Answer:
The commonest cause is stone in CBD not seen on ultrasound, cancer is rare

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
Please find my observations below.

1. Ultrasound scan is a basic tool and there is some obstruction to passsage of bile in the common bile duct.

2. The commones cause for an obstruction is a stone. This is followed by a benign stricture and rarely it can be cancer.

3. In the CT scan done last year, it is mentioned about a probably recenly passed out gall stone.

4. It is possible that this tyime also you have another stone which is stuck in the common bile duct, especially if you are having pain in the region.

5. It is important to know that ultrasound cannot visualise the complete common bile duct and therefore a MRCP is suggested for you.

Hope your query is answered.

Thanks for your response. The pain is between my shoulder blades and on the right side of my abdomen. Not excruciating. I am so worked up about this, I have not had much of an appetite.
The information you provided was very helpful.

Please control your anxiety and likely your problem is benign

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for writing back with an update.

1. Your decreased appetite is likely from anxiety. Please remember that benign causes are more common and keeping in mind the CT scan report, it is probably another small stone which is blocking the passage.
