Question : I am curious. I'm 64 and my screening mammo showed architectural distortion in right breast when compared to previous mammo and left breast. I've had no prior surgery do its not a scar. I'm scheduled for a diagnostic ultrasound After reading literature how often does this require a biopsy to get a definitive answer?

There may be many causes of architectural distortion in breast mammography.It may be due to surgery,scar,malignant reasons.However,distortion is also seen in benign lesions.
So,you are rightly advised for ultrasonography.Combined mammography and ultrasonography increases the sensitivity of detection of lesions.

Over 75% of the time an architectural distortion is caused by breast cancer. Requirement of biopsy depend upon ultrasonography findings.If there is any lesions detected during ultrasonography then biopsy is needed.
