What Does My Ultrasound Scan Report Indicate?

default
Posted on Mon, 6 Jul 2015
Question: Scan @ 24 weeks says that i am having low lying placenta. Report says as follows,

Placenta is implanted along the posterior wall extending to lower uterine segment the lower margin is just touching the internal os showing Gr I maturity - Low lying Placenta.

My doctor advised me to take rest and should not travel or lift weights. Hence i am work from home right now. I am really worried.
Will this affects my baby?
Is this curable??
What steps i need to follow to overcome this?
What is the worst case of low lying placenta?

Brief Answer:
Please get another scan done at 28 weeks to know if placenta has moved up

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
Please find my observations below.

1. I do ultrasound scans regularly and come across many patients with grade I low lying placenta at 24 weeks pregnancy.

2. It means that the placenta is present close to the mouth of uterus. Since it is just touching the internal os, there is every possibility that it will attain a safe position after 28 weeks which is the time placenta gets fixed.

3. You need not take bed rest but please avoid lifting weights and heavy physical work.

4. Your baby is safe and the low lying placenta is only a problem associated with delivery.

5. It is not a disease that requires cure. In most women, the placenta will have a normal position after 28 weeks. Please get another ultrasound scan done at 28 weeks and ask the doctor what is position of placenta and that your 24 weeks scan showed low lying placenta with lower end of placenta touching internal os.

6. There are no steps except avoiding lifting weights and heavy physical work. You can do light daily activities. During travel, avoid potholes and go in slow speed.

7. With low lying placenta at term, normal delivery becomes risky and cesarean section is advised. The worst case of low lying placenta that persists till delivery is that the patient will require cesarean section. Normal delivery might cause bleeding and is avoided.

Hope this answers your question. Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.

Hope your query is answered.
