Question : My husband just got his CBC back. It shows a WBC count of 14.1 (thousand) Neutrophils 8.6, Lymph 4.3, mono 0.9, EO 0.2 BASO 0.1- His HGB is noted as high also noted as high at 17.4. The doctor did not call or seem concerned he just said recheck on 5/31-- I am concerned this can be something more serious.

Brief Answer:
Is he having any other symptoms?

Detailed Answer:
HI and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this report and all the inconveniences this must have caused you. I have reviewed these results are they are clearly abnormal. If you could tell me whether your husband has any symptoms or not, that would be helpful. If he has symptoms, the we will definitely need to probe deeper. If there are no symptoms, this could likely be a mistake and requires nothing further control at a later date as recommended by your doctor.

Let me hear from you on what your immediate thoughts are. I wish your husband well and feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be. Above all, thanks for trusting us with your health query.

What caused him to go to the doctor was pain in his finger. He cut his finger about 12-18 months ago ( I don't remember exactly), and he said that the finger has been bothering him lately. He said the tip felt hard and white-- and there were issues with cold sensitivity. He went to the doctor and they did not do anything the first time ( other than an xray) which was fine. The second time the doctor suggested that the cause was Raynaud's disease, and he also suggested that there may be an infection in the finger. He gave him a calcium channel blocker ( not sure which one) and said that would help control blood pressure that was a bit high ( around 145/72), he also gave him Keflex for the finger and ordered the CBC. He sent the CBC results in the mail. He said that he is not having symptoms other than the pain in his finger. I do notice that he has occasional night sweats, and is a bit tired.....( this is not totally abnormal for him). I wonder if there ever really was/is an infection to begin with-- this cut was over a year ago-- And he said that the finger is still painful even after being on antibiotics for 8 days.

Brief Answer:
Certainly not an infection!

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I will say let him see a hematologist at this point. With increased red and whites cells, this needs further evaluation as a clear cause cannot be identified.

Let me know when this happens. It could be Raynaud's but that doesn't explain the high WBC and hemoglobin levels. This high blood pressure might simply be explained by the increased hemoglobin mass.

I wish you well.

His red blood cells are not elevated-- they are 5.7.

Brief Answer:
The HB of 17.4 is too much!

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

The HB of 17.4 is way over the board. We normally don't see more than 16 in healthy adults. This really needs to be checked and more so because the WBC are elevated and we have no answers as to why. I will strongly recommend that you see a hematologist just to be safe than sorry, at least.

I wish you both well.
