Question: My husband came home from doctor with diagnosis of peripheral arterial disease with stenosis of the left SFA on arterial duplex. He does not know what it means or how serious it is. he is 57 and has had a hip replacement on the left side. Has had pain down that leg ever since but now has this problem on the same side. Are they related and how does this affect the hip replacement?

Detailed Answer:
Hi and welcome.

Stenosis of sfa means that there is narrowed superficial femoral artery and this is caused in most cases by atherosclerosis. Stenosis means that there is still sufficient blood flow through it,but. it may cause pain in legs after walk, depending on degree of stenosis. This all has nothing to do with hip replacement. He should see vascular surgeon and in future,if stenosis progresses, surgical procedures may be required to recanalize arteries. Wish you good health.
