Question : Please provide layman's understanding of transvaginal untrasound radiology report stating "anechoic structures visualized at cervix, two nabothian cysts demonstrated measuring 0.6 x 0.4 x 0.4 and 0.4 x 0.4 x 0.3. No free fluid in pelvis. " I have had pelvic pain for 2 weeks, previously thought to be from e-coli UTI that began 3/6 and resolved 2 weeks ago. Pain persists, PAP and CA 125 clear. Cancer still possible? Will discuss with Gyn but want to understand report sooner that appt set. More details available but other comments state no masses and nothing remarkable. Thanks, XXXXX
Brief Answer:
Cancer very unlikely.
Detailed Answer:
Hi, I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.
Nabothian cysts are mucus-filled cysts at end of vagina/ cervix, they are considered as metaplasia ( harmless).
Anechoic means no echoes in ultrasound or dark image. It is produced by fluid-filled cysts or blood vessels in ultrasound.
Chances of cancer are very-very unlikely.
Hope this answers your question. If you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your questions.

How do I get rid of them? Can/should they be removed surgically? And since they cause pain rather than not, should fhey be biopsied?
Brief Answer:
They can be removed by electrocautery and cryofreezing.
Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks for asking back.
Nabothian cysts usually are considered harmless and in most cases they disappear on their own.
When there is tendency of growing in follow up examinations, removing these cysts include electrocautery and cryofreezing procedures.
This needs to be disscused with your Gynecologist.
Biopsy is indicated when true nature of cysts is not clear, or when are doubts about malignancy.
Hope this helps. Best regards.
