Posted on Mon, 30 May 2016
Question: Good morning Doctor,
I got bitten by a stray dog yesterday while I was feeding biscuits. I had no bleeding from the bite. I consulted doctor and he gave 3 dosage schedule of Rabipur.
Kindly let me know in simple terms, Is this 3 dosage enough? Am I life long free from any problem or rabies disease , because of this current dog bite?

I'm scared.

Thanks

Brief Answer:
Follow the instructions

Detailed Answer:
Welcome to health care magic, I share your concern and I will try to help you out in best possible way.
In case of a dog bite apart from 3 scheduled dosages, 2 more booster dosages should be received after 1 year. After receiving such 5 doses you will be immune to Rabis for a period of 9-10 years, after which you should receive 3 more doses only in case of a dog bite or you can take booster 2 booster doses 1 year apart after 10 years. Hence there won't be life long immunity by receivin just 3 scheduled doses of Rabipur vaccine. Every time you receive scheduled dosages and booster doses, you will be immune for upto 10 years.
Hope this clarifies your doubts. Revert back to me if you have follow up queries.

The doctor that I consulted didn't utter a word about booster dosage after a year. He said that the current 3 dosage alone is enough.
Please let me know if the booster dosage after 1 year is for my current dog bite or is it for a preventive measure for defense from future risk of rabies?
Kindly answer this question and I do not have further clarification apart from this

Brief Answer:
Usually it is given for further prevention.

Detailed Answer:
I appreciate your follow up.
As the name indicates, booster dose is to boost your immunity against any further attack from rabid dog bite. First three dosages are sufficient to clear your present infection. So its better to take booster doses for your own good even if your treating doctor has not advised it.
I hope this helps you.Get back to me if you have any further queries. If not, you may close the discussion and if possible you may rate the answer for me, so that I get a good feedback. Wishing you good health.
