Why Does Walking Up And Down Hills Cause Lower Back Pain?

default
Posted on Mon, 23 Nov 2015
Question: I walked up a few slightly steep hills in a subdivision with my grandkids. I haven't walked up any hills in a while do you think I could have strained my back. When I came home my lower back was a little sore. I used some biofreeze on it. I am taking a trip to New York tomorrow and will be sitting in a car for about 10 hours. Please advise.

Brief Answer:
Muscle spasm likely.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
Back pain can be due to muscle spasm caused due to improper stretching of back muscles due to faulty posture while walking on steep hills.
The pain will improve with NSAID (Non Steroidal Anti Inflammatory Agents) - like ibuprofen, diclofenac, celecoxib and so on. Sometimes they can cause stomach irritation in some people - Take them after food. Simple Paracetamol alone and or in combination could also help.
At times, a muscle relaxant - like chlorzoxazone or methocarbamol - is added.
You can get a proper prescription from your General Physician.
Even hot fomentation will help in reducing/eliminating the pain.

If the pain persists, I would strongly recommend you to visit an orthopedic surgeon.
You can travel if the pain is relieved with muscle relaxants.
I hope this answers your query.
In case you have additional questions or doubts, you can forward them to me, and I shall be glad to help you out.
Wishing you good health.
