11 Day Old Child Vomited While Feeding And Stopped Breathing, Put On Tobramycin. How Long Can She Safely Be On It?

Have an 11 day old granddaughter in NICU (NAS baby), vomited while feeding and stopped breathing, 1st time, they put in an IV for fluids, took her off the formula "for now", took a blood culture and said her immune system is defficient and put her on tobramycin. I am concerned, this is the first time we have heard anything about blood cultures, found out results of a lab test through the mail!!!!! We seem to be getting the run around and conflicting answers. Tobramycinn concerns me, should it? How long can she safely be on it?

Hi,

Thanks for writing to health care magic.

I think your baby is having late onset sepsis from the few details you mentioned. Such a diagnosis depends on various investigations like CRP, blood culture, CBC, etc. Was a lumbar puncture done?

In such a scenario the antibiotic choice depends on the culture and sensitivity report.

Hope this helps.
Take care.
