13 Month Old Has A Dip In Head. Anything To Be Concerned ?
My 13 month old has a dip in his head, around where his anterior fontanelle is. It is very noticeable. I can t imagine he is dehydrated, he drinks plenty of milk and water. Not sure how long it s been like this. I don t know if we never noticed it or if it is new. Is this something we should call the md about tomorrow? We have a nurses appt. for a flu shot on the 29th, can it wait until then?

You have noticed dip in the head of Your 13 months old child.You are sure that he is not dehydrated .This is most likely a anterior fontanelle which may be little larger than normal and you have accidently noticed now.There is nothing to worry about.In some child it is larger than normal and takes more time to close it.

The depression in the anterior fontanelle in a 13 month old without any apparent signs of trauma/alteration in behaviour/change in level of consciousness/vomitting/loose stools/will not be a serious issue.
kindly check his both pupils with a torch whether both are equal and reacting normally to light ie.,the pupillary apertures are both of same size and closing with same pace on throwing light at them.
If there are no problems in pupils also be assured that there is nothing wrong at all intracranially.
There is no intervention required as it will resolve with time.Please be reassured.
If there are any neuro symptoms including pupillary assymmetry etc ,pls consult your MD immediately.

To rule out dehydration, look for other symptoms and signs like reduced urine output, dry mouth and skin etc.
Did you examine the fontanelle in lying posture too? Do you feel the pulsations, if pulsations are felt, you need not worry.
And anterior fontanelle usually starts closing by 18 months of age, when the closure is happening, thick membrane will be formed before getting ossified (bone). In such a case a dip is normally seen.
If child is active, feeding well and passing urine atleast 4 to 5 times in a 12 hr period, you need not worry and you may wait.
