2 Year Old Vomiting After Drinking Milk. Foul Smelling Loose Stool. Has GERD. Is It A Stomach Infection?
I am a daycare provider...parent says that 2 year old has been vomiting after he drinks his milk every day for several days. Once right away and then again latter sometimes. She has tried goats milk, coconut milk, and her own frozen breast milk, and he still vomits after each one. He does not drink cows milk. She also says that when he vomits the food looks undigested, even if it has been several hours since he ate. This morning he has yellow, runny and very foul smelling stool. Any suggestions? He had GRED as an infant, are we seeing a recurrence of this or just a tummy bug?
You haven't mentioned how long this has been happening, though you said "several days" which I take to be 5-7 days. I would presume this is a viral infection, because with GERD, you are unlikely to get a "recurrence" if it has already subsided a year ago. Also, he would not have a foul-smelling stool.
I recommend that his parents continue feeding him with smaller quantities of milk or food more frequently, use a vomiting medicine like domperidone or ondansetron (they might need to go to a doctor for prescriptions of the above) and give him water with salt and sugar to prevent dehydration. If the symptoms aren't better in a day or two, please ask the parents to take the kid to his doctor.
