80 Years. On And Off Swelling And Redness In Hands And Feet. On Pradaxa For A-fib. History Of Broken Tibia And On Rehab. Negative For Gout. Ideas?

I am 80 years old and in reasonably good health. I have been having swellng and redness in my hands and feet off and on for 5 months. I was tested for gout, but did not have it. I have A-Fib and have been on Pradaxa (2 da) for 5 years. My family practioner does not know what it is. I broke my tibia on Mar 31st and was in Rehab for 2 months. That is when this all started. Any info you could give me would be appreciated. Thank you.

Hello,

Thanks for posting,

Unfortunately you did not mention if the red swelling of hands and feet is associated to a pain or is painless. Ruling out gout is fine but it is not the only cause of red swelling. Polyarthritis (a condition of multiple joints inflammation) could be responsible. It might be septic/infectious or non-septic/non-infectious. If I was to treat you, I would need to run a CBC, ASLO, rheumatoid factor, CRP, ESR, urinalysis, blood culture, blood urea/creatinine, X-ray etc (to start with) and if they all come negative, I will consider treating you with corticosteroids for short term then observe if any improvement.
Given your age, there is always the possibility of arthritis (could be rheumatoid arthritis, gouty arthritis, septic arthritis and other forms).
I suggest you see a rheumatologist.

Hope this helps
