9 Year Old. Blood In Stool. Should I Consult Doctor?

hi, im a little concerned for my 9 yr old daughter, over the weekend when she emptied her bowels there was what seemed like a lot of blood in the toilet afterwards what seemed to pool around the faeces...took her to a&e the checked her stomach , her urine , examined her bottom (outside only) but couldnt see anything like piles or fissures, they told me to give her lots of fruit and veg and yogurt in her diet which she has anyway and to see how it goes....shes been fine until today where she has just emptied her bowels again and there is slight blood again, nothing as bad as at the weekend but still there all the same....should i take her back to the hospital? the blood is bright red by the way, not dark, no clots, thanks

Hi,

Thank you for your query.

I can understand your concern. The most common cause of passing blood at the end of stool is internal piles. I hope the doctors did an internal examination by using an instrument called proctoscope. If not then the best course would be to get your daughter re-examined preferably by a surgeon who would do proctoscopy. In case this examination is normal then the doctor would like to do a colonscopy to find the source of bleeding higher up in the large colon.

Kindly continue giving the diet suggested by the doctors in the form of fruits and vegetables and yogurt.

I hope I have answered your query to your satisfaction.

Wishing your daughter all the best.

Regards,

RKK

Emergency Medicine Specialist Dr. Sheeba Stephen's  Response
Hello and welcome to Healthcare Magic. Thanks for your query.

Bright red blood in stools is indicative of fresh bleeding - most likely from the rectum / anus. The most common cause for this is an anal fissure or a hemorrhoid. Anal fissures may not be obvious by external examination and could be the most likely cause of your daughter's symptoms.

Since the second episode of bleeding is only minimal, I don't think that you have to get worried. Ensure that there is free bowel movements and avoid constipation by all means. In addition to taking a lot of fruits and vegetables, avoid spicy, oily or had foods and make sure that she drinks plenty of fluids.

Best wishes,
Dr. Sheeba Stephen
