93 Years. Severe Diverticulitis, Possibly Spread To Bladder. History Of Draining Abscessed Fluid From Bladder. No Help From Antibiotics. Surgery Recommended?
My mother-in-law has a severe case of diverticulitis that may have spread to her bladder. She is almost 93 years old and has been to the hospital three straight months now with this problem. Last month the doctors drained the absessed fluid out but the anitbiotics didn't help. The doctors said they could do surgery because the desease will continue from now on. The doctors have left it up to us whether we want her to have surgery or have hospice. At her age, what do you recommend?
I think other options and steps are required to be explored before jumping to surgery. Getting samples of this fluid and culture and sensitivity tests done, to know the exact germ and antibiotic that could treat the organism. It s after this that exams like fistulographies , ultrasound to understand the exact location and communication pathways of this abscess before thinking of surgery. A complete clinical review by a general surgeon or visceral surgeon should be considered. Hope this helps. Kind regards,
Bain LE, MD.
