Abdominal Pain, Hair In Stool. Normal Barium X-ray And CT Scan. What Is It?

My 19 year old son found a very long (12 in) coarse "hair" in his stool. He said it was not like a human hair....more like a hair from a horse mane. Prior to this episode, he had extreme abdominal pain and had to be taken to hospital. Since then he has had numerous tests to include CT scan, upper and lower GI series and barium swallow. It appears that he has a redundant colon and was put on Miralax daily. He continues to have the abdominal pain periodically. Any idea what this hair type "thing" is?

Hello and welcome to HCM,

Abdominal pain, presence of animal hair in stools, absence of any lesion on ultrasound of the abdomen suggests a psychiatric illness in the child rather that some organic lesion.
Since, all the abdominal investigations are within normal limits, you need to consult a psychiatrist for further work up.

Thanks and take care
