To get your ideal heart rate when working out. First subtract your age from 230 to get your maximum heart rate. = 206 in your case. 230-24 In a good cardio workout you ideally want to be working out in a band of about 75-80% of your maximum. Therfore in your case this is 155-164bpm. Your are therfore working out at an optimum exertion for you body. If your heart rate went above 164 it would be to high and you should lower the setting on the machines. If your heart rate is below 155 then the machines are set too low and your not getting the best from your workout. Its good practice to warm yourself up properly, e.g. if your using a treadmill start off with a gentle walk for a couple of minutes building the pace up to running and optimum heart rate, rather than going falt out straight away. Your resting heart rate is fine for your age as well, resting heart rate tends to be higher in younger people and comes down with age.
