hey,
my mums been having a lot of difficulty climbing stairs and carrying anything heavy for long...she doesnt seem to have the endurance to carry those things...plus she feels that she needs to be careful while walking and climbing stairs to avoid falls...she has only fallen once ...a couple of years back while carrying grocery...more of a tripping accident...lately she also feels more fatigue than usual...the last ortho we want to put her on vitamins d n some other vitamins...n she is starting tio have more energy
she is 55...her cpk is around 2000 and esr is around 22...her full xray shows calcification on the pelvis incidentally and decreased bone density which is due to her osteoporosis...
the doctors keep asking for more tests but so far none of them have given a tangible diagnosis...

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

From your description, I feel that the cause of your mother's weakness and fatigue is the ABNORMALLY HIGH LEVELS of Creatine phospho kinase -CPK (2000). The normal range should be between 10-120.

This abnormally elevated levels of CPK suggests some serious damage to the SKELETAL MUSCLES in the absence of Cardiac problem (as CPK levels will also rise after a heart attack).

So a detailed evaluation is needed to diagnose the possible cause for the elevated CPK levels.

Consult a physician for a detailed workup and management.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
