Ankle Injury. Started RICE. X-ray Shows Tissue Damage. Information?
Hello, and thank you. Four and a half weeks ago I injured my ankle playing volleyball. Someone came under the net, rolling my ankle and then landed on top of it while it was in an inward compromised position. I immediately started RICE and have continued to do so. Unfortunately I just resigned from my job to start my own business and don't have health insurance yet. Even still, I went to a doctor where I had x-rays done. The x-rays did not show any breaks but showed some sever tissue damage and I was told I had likely torn my talofibular ligaments. I've been in a boot every day since, and continue good care of the injured regions.
My concern is that my ankle is still swollen after a long time, and along with hurting my skin is like silly putty. If I push on any part of my foot I can leave a fingerprint indention that stays for minutes before returning to normal. I'd prefer not to have to pay for an MRI without insurance, and the original diagnosis was 6-8 weeks in the boot.
Any advice or information you can offer would be hugely appreciated. Thank you again for your time.
Welcome to HCM.Soft tissue injuries of the ankle can take from 8-16 weeks to heal, the best results are seen after use of a POP cast for 6-8 weeks which gives complete rest to the joint and a chance for proper healing. If mobilisation of the joint /weight bearing is done earlier, the healing ligaments get rebroken and the pain and swelling may persist for a much longer time, maybe many months may be involved. Please continue resting and elevating the limb,do not go in for early weight bearing as that may be harmful.
