Anterior Shin Splits, Knot On Tibial Tendon, Bruise On Affected Area, Worsening Swelling. Treatment?

I have had anterior shin splints for over a month now. The newest addition to the problem is a knot that has come up on the anterior tibialis tendon in the ankle area, near the medial malleolus . There is somewhat of a bruise on the affected area and it is swollen near the knot. The swelling is worse after activity and goes down with rest, ice, and NSAIDs. Often times, particularly after practice there is a burning sensation. The pain isn t too extensive, but can be very annoying. I am a college tennis player. 5 ft 7 in. 185 lbs.

Hi,
Welcome to the forum.
According to your description, what you have might be due to shin splints.
Shin splints usually result from overuse. Repeated movements of the foot can cause damage where the tibialis muscles attach to the tibia. Soon the edge of the muscles may begin to pull away from the bone. The injured muscle and the bone covering (the periosteum) become inflamed.
I advise you to-
1. Take rest. It plays a key role in decreasing pain and inflammation.
2. Stop doing the activity that caused the problem, at least until their symptoms are under control.
3. Apply cold packs and take anti-inflammatory medications like Motrin to calm pain and inflammation.
