Are IBS And Depression Related And Having Severe Constipation?
Hello, My question is regarding depression and IBS. I have had v. mild sx s of IBS in the past, and these were controlled with the prokinetic agent tegaserod (Zelnorm) which is now off the market due to the incidence of stroke/heart disease in older females. Last year I had ECT (12 treatments) and 2-3 weeks post, I had severe constipation and progressively IBS. Under the guidance of a gastroenterologist I have taken Resotran 4mg (double dose) for months with no improvement. In addition, with the management of my psychiatrist, I stopped the cymbalta, and we substituted sertraline-but no improvement. Do you think that the IBS and the depression are related? Any suggestions?
Yes the depression and IBS are related, you are correct. IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) tends to flare up or worsen with changes in mood, anxiety and stress. First of all it is important to drink plenty of fluids (1 ounce per kg of weight) and eat plenty of fiber (fruits and vegetables) about 6 to 7 servings a day. You may also try probiotics, or yogurt with live active cultures to help regulate your bowels. Best regards
